Splash into Summer Break!
Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer break thus far! Through the summer it is good to continue reading some everyday and doing some math a couple times a week in order to help children retain all the information they have been learning throughout the school year. “A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school and work. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative activity for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds
for them.”
(http://www.med.umich.edu/yourchild/topics/reading.htm). Let's open as many doors and opportunities for our children!
Check out the resources I found online for you to access, or find in our school library. Our library will be open every Tuesday from July 10th through the 31st for our annual Summer Reading Program. There are a number of new books that have been added to the library for this reading program. I encourage you to check out 4-5 books to read throughout the week.
Summer Tools:
- “Reading, Literacy and Your Child”
(http://www.med.umich.edu/yourchild/topics/reading.htm) A great resource with ideas to give you to help make reading fun over the summer!
- International Children’s Library
(http://en.childrenslibrary.org/index.shtml) – An online library that offers books in many different languages (be sure to choose the English books when searching for books).
- Summer Reading List – This list is not a check list, it is just some good kindergarten and first grade leveled books that are available. We have many new books in the library, so please do check those out as well!
- IXL.com (http://www.ixl.com/promo?partner=google&phrase=Search%20-%20IXL%20-%20Branded&gclid=CL77vc-sy7ACFYqb7Qods1dlXg) – A website with a wonderful program that finds where the student is and walks him or her through all their problem areas. There is a free trial month subscription. They also have a very reasonable yearly fee. I suggest using this at least 3 times a week, especially for the month of July.
- Spellling City (spellingcity.com) will be up and running, so please feel free to use it for review purposes during the summer.
I wish you all a safe, encouraging, and wonderful summer break! Hope these resources can assist you as you and your family have some fantastic summer adventures!
March in K-1
We have been celebrating and focusing on reading this month for Read Me Month! Our class has been keeping track of the number of books we are reading by sticking flowers on our Horton poster. We get to add one flower for every book we read, so keep up the awesome reading at home! We also celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2nd with a wonderful feast of green eggs, ham, pancakes, melons, and many other not so green goodies. Since the beginning of the school year we have all been collecting special work to share with you all at our special Academic Fair that is coming up at the end of this month! Please do come in and see all of our hard work!
February in K-1
We have been working extra hard in K-1 this past couple months. Ms. Kelly has joined our class and has been helping us for the past month and a half. She has been helping us learn about coins, fractions, and next week we will be working on telling time. Ask us who is on the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, we would be very happy to share what we have learned with you! We have also learned what each coin is worth, so please ask us that as well. Ms. Kelly will be going to help Ms. Canneto's class in 2 weeks. We will miss her being in our class and helping us with many wonderful reading, math, science, and social studies activities!
Below is a picture of the school bulletin board for this month. It was our class's turn to create the bulletin board, so please do stop in and see how many of the pictures you can identify. We wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day!

Fire Safety
Practicing crawling out under the smoke.
This week we were all invited to the Fire Station for a special presentation on fire safety! We learned about how to get out of our house if it is on fire, to “Stop, Drop, and Roll” if we are on fire, and about the different vehicles that are used to put out fires. Seeing Firefighter Ody wearing is fire suit and mask helped us all understand that we do not need to hide from firefighters, because they are coming into help us get out. We also took turns spraying water with the big fire hose! A special “Thank you!” to our AUTEC Firefighters for putting together such a wonderful fire safety demonstration!
Presenting Kindergarten and First Grade!
We have gotten off to a slightly delayed (due to hurricane evacuation), but fantastic start this year! This year we have two new students joining our AUTEC School family! Please welcome Nicholas Meier and Brody Twitchell! It is good to have Jacob Lester and Wesley Shroeder, our well acquainted first graders, back and helping our kindergarteners get acclimated to school! Everyone has been doing so well and I am eager to continue on this exciting journey as we learn and grow in many ways this coming year!

Remembering Our Veterans
Hello Everyone!
For our Social Studies this week we have been learning about Veteran’s Day. On Tuesday Mrs. Sammie Garnett spoke to us about important symbols in the Navy. We had many questions to ask and were all very attentive throughout the whole presentation. Mrs. Garnett was so impressed she let us come back for a short encore discussion after lunch!
In honor of Veteranss Day, K-1 has dedicated their journal entries to the reason for this special day. The students were given the choice of writing about either why we celebrate Veteran’s Day or what we can do to celebrate it with our local veterans. Here is what the students wrote in their journals:
“I could go to the navy to say “Thank you!” for saving the world! – Jacob Lester
“We have Veteran’s Day because the soldiers protected our country.” – Wesley Schroeder
“We should say “Thank you” to our Veterans because they protected us and put themselves in danger for our country.” – Alexa Erkman
“We celebrate Veteran’s Day because they protected our country! I want to be a soldier.” – Gage Quigley
Our Spelling Words for this week: (Home Learning {HL} ideas: Write the words in alphabetical order, find two rhyming words for each spelling word, group the words into their designated word families, and look for these words in our library books.)

School will be closed on Thursday (11/11) in observance of Veteran’s Day. There will be a ceremony to honor our veterans at 08:00 on Thursday morning. I will be off island for my final two licensing exams. Mrs. Bennett will be substituting for me Friday morning and I will be back for the afternoon. We have been reading Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. I would like to show the movie James and the Giant Peach Friday afternoon. The movie is PG. Please let me know if you would rather that your child not watch the movie. I want to have the children compare the plot of the book to that of the movie. This help them see that stories are often changed when they are made into movies.
K-1 is full of great writers!
You may notice a graded writing assignment in your child’s bag this evening. Each quarter Ms. Chatham gives a school wide writing prompt. Last week was our writing assignment for this first quarter. Ms. Chatham asked students to write about a time when they heard someone using mean words. In our class, especially for the kindergarten students, I write down what they would like to write in answer to Ms. Chatham’s question. The students then copy the writing in their neatest handwriting remembering to capitalize the first letter of each sentence and names/places. Students also need to add punctuation marks. We have been learning about writing complete sentences especially during journaling time. They all did a wonderful job!
I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be in West Palm for some exams. Emily Back has will be substituting Thursday and Friday morning. Ms. Washington has offered to have our class spend Thursday afternoon with 2-3! Thank you Emily and Ms. Washington for your help! Friday is a half day for students and Angela Matusik has kindly graciously offered to show The Last Airbender movie at the base theater!

(Good home activities are to have students write the words in alphabetic order and clap out the syllables in each word.)

What do you what to be when you grow up?
Asking Mr. Trent questions about his job.

We would like to say a special “Thank you!” to Mr. Trent and Ms. Cheryl for telling us all about working in the Post Office AND for the cookies J. Here are some of our thoughts about what we want to be when we grow up:
“I want to be a doctor when I grow up.” – Alexa Erkman
“I want to be in the army.” – Gage Quigley
“I want to drive a Thunderbird.” – Jacob Lester
